StreeterWalk into Drew Streeter’s class and you immediately notice the smell of coffee and the sharply dressed walls, full of student work from his 15 years of teaching at Valley Christian. It doesn’t take too much longer in the classroom to recognize the personal connection Mr. Streeter and his students have with one another.

One of the first projects the students completed this school year was a biography on a classmate. “The biography assignment not only helps them understand what makes good writing, it connects the students and serves our mission statement of preparing them socially,” Streeter commented. “There were some really amazing stories.”

The students not only interviewed their classmates to write a biography, they then presented their biography to the class. The result was an entire class of students getting to learn incredible things about their peers and developing connections and community.

Up next for the freshman English class is a cross-curricular writing project. The students will be writing a spiritual autobiography. These are just the first few projects of the school year for an English class that will certainly challenge and develop the Class of 2019. Currently, the students are reading a contemporary Christian novel that challenges them about how deep their faith is and how far they are willing to go for their faith.

As always, this newest group of Trojans will join the previous classes in the time honored tradition of “Romeo and Juliet” skits in the courtyard when it’s time for the Shakespeare unit later in the school year. The culminating unit will feature a showcase of student written poetry that will end the year on a positive note.
