This adaptation of the story of King Ferdinand of Navarre is set in 1939 pre-war England. The King decides that he and his courtiers will spend three years studying and contemplating life by avoiding food and sleep and by banning all women from the court, much to the dismay of his courtiers!

On the same day of his proclamation, the Princess of France is due to arrive. Insulted by the ban, and in protest when the King puts her in a tent for the night, the Princess and her ladies begin plotting their revenge.

In the meantime, love letters and gifts are exchanged, disguises are donned and confusion abounds. Having broken all the rules, the King decides to reverse the ban on women and all are united for a pageant.

Unfortunately, news comes that the King of France has died. The Princess must return to France and tells King Ferdinand that she will only consider his marriage proposal if he will spend a year in penance.

The comic subplot of the “Fantastical” Spaniard, Don Armado and the clown, Costard in their joint pursuit of Jaquenetta, makes for even more mayhem.
